Path of the Idle Cultivator Weapon Trees Ranked
Nine types, one bloodline canvas, and no invented damage sheets.
Every weapon type in Path of the Idle Cultivator has its own skill tree: Fist, Palm, Sword, Spear, Claw, Staff, Axe, Fan, and Zither. Origins and weapons overlap — Sword origin wants the sword tree — but they are not identical. You can train a weapon that is not your origin, and bloodline nodes can be filtered by weapon even when your current life is Common. This list ranks the nine trees for Steam Early Access (opened 5 Sep 2026, free to play, single-player, English).
Criteria match the origins tier list: first-life speed, rebirth value, combat versus idle, Early Access volatility. Extra axes for weapons: depth of the skill tree, how hard proficiency is to feed, and whether the bloodline canvas actually cares. We still refuse fake DPS. A sword at “absolute infinite” intent with 2,150 proficiency and no talent from training will still fail to roll sword bloodlines — the developer has said so in public comments.
S — Sword
Sword is the combat default. The tree is the deepest public kit: proficiency, intent, aura folded into cut spirit (the old nine aura steps are gone as of v0.3.2), and bloodlines that demand both proficiency and talent while you train. Origin quests for Sword Cultivator feed the same loop. First-life speed is high if you use the combat tab and the map. Idle is whatever your manuals and pills are doing while the blade sits. Volatility is medium. If you only train one tree in a first life, train this one.
Hotkeys matter more than people think. Speed keys (1 through 8, plus the rest of the speed bar) decide how many fights you actually finish while alchemy ticks. Pair this page with hotkeys so you are not clicking the multiplier like a mortal.
A — Fist, Palm, Spear, Fan
Fist is A as a tree and C as an origin’s first hour. The fist skill tree was retuned in v0.3.2. Weight stats were added for body cultivators. Fist intent on all origins is the unlock that lets you cultivate when the Fist origin historically could not gather Qi the same way. Rebirth value is huge because intent is account-shaped. Combat is blunt and late. Do not skip the tree just because the origin is slow.
Palm has a dedicated skill tree and a dedicated origin, both touched in the 0.3.x line. Endurance combat, fewer flashy cut-spirit moments, more “still standing.” First-life speed is acceptable. Bloodline filters will take palm nodes if you train them. Volatility is medium after the palm rework.
Spear is the comeback tree. The spear origin was reworked in v0.3.5; the weapon tree is no longer a leftover poke. Combat is reach and commitment. First-life speed is good. Volatility is high in the sense that it already got rewritten once — enjoy the current kit, do not tattoo the old one on a bloodline canvas overnight.
Fan is A for the same reason the origin is A: node fusion. Finish the Fan origin questline, control the dantian, then fuse elemental nodes. After that questline, element changes wait on rebirth. The fan tree plus the elemental skill tree (skills are not weapons-only anymore as of v0.3.2) is how elemental builds stop being a junk drawer of 6% nodes. Combat is specialist. Idle and rebirth value are high. Crafting support lives on alchemy and forge because pills and weapons share inventory with the sect.
B — Claw, Staff, Axe
Claw pairs with Beast origin and Divine Beast hunting. Snow Crane, Venom Serpent, Azure Dragon, Thunder Tiger, Starborn Tortoise, and Ethereal Serpent are the named roster. Auto-hunt and auto-friend exist; friendship is slow. Claw is the weapon filter you train if those parts and eggs are your bloodline plan. First-life speed is low. Combat is fine once the beasts are online.
Staff received an origin-side rework in v0.3.5. The tree is a real path, not a joke stick. Combat is mid. Idle is mid. Rebirth value depends on whether you keep staffing the canvas. Volatility is medium.
Axe is the berserker lane (axe cultivator origin was reworked in v0.3.5). Burst combat, less meditation flavor. First-life speed is average if you like hitting things. Bloodline synergy exists because weapon skill buffs were added to bloodlines when the old strength bloodline was removed. Do not look for a “strength” tree; look for axe nodes.
C — Zither
Zither is the harmonic path. Steam achievements already name the fantasy (harmonic, sound, resonance), which is how you know the tree is real, but the combat-first community still treats it as a specialist. First-life speed is low if your goal is tribulation turns. Rebirth value is unknown-to-medium; train it if you like the kit, not because a list promised S. Volatility is high simply because fewer players document it. If you main zither, write down what the tree actually does after each patch — this wiki will not invent a rotation.
Proficiency, talent, and the canvas
Proficiency is not a vanity level. Sword bloodlines in particular want high proficiency plus talent gained while training the weapon. Luck stacking without those two is a waste of combat hours. The bloodline canvas can filter by weapon type; spend points on the filter you trained. Weapon skill buffs live on bloodline nodes now. Armor rarity buffs can also touch weapon skills. That is why this list talks about synergy instead of a single “best sword.”
Weapon ascension is a long combat sink. Pack size caps (players have asked about bigger than 1,000x packs) mean you will eventually want clan farming rather than a bigger multiplier. Do not stall a life waiting for a pack size that is not in the build. Forge, pills, and shared sect inventory are the other half of a weapon’s power — see alchemy and forge.
How to pick without lying to yourself
First life, combat-curious: Sword. Body-curious: Fist tree even if you started Common. Element hoarder: Fan. Beast keeper: Claw. Want the current rework spotlight: Spear. Want to hit things with an axe: Axe, knowing it is B. Want music: Zither, knowing it is C on a combat-first list.
Then open the origins tier list and confirm the life you locked still wants that tree. A Fan origin with an untrained fan tree is a questline you have not started. A Sword origin with a zither because it looked pretty is a tribulation you will lose.
Letters will move when trees move. Palm and fist already did. Spear already did. Sword aura already collapsed into cut spirit. Recheck after patch notes, keep hotkeys bound, and spend talent while the weapon is in your hand — not after the fight log is already a million years long.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is Sword always the best weapon?
It is the best default combat tree in Early Access: proficiency, intent, cut spirit, and bloodlines that actually ask for sword training. Other trees win on body, elements, or beasts.
Why won’t sword bloodlines drop for me?
You need strong sword proficiency and talent gained while training the weapon. Luck alone is not the gate. The developer has confirmed this in public replies.
Should I train Fist if I am not Fist origin?
Yes if you want fist intent on all origins so cultivate unlocks properly. The Fist origin is the slow Qi life; the fist tree is still worth points.
Where does Fan rank if I only care about nodes?
A. Finish the Fan origin questline, control the dantian, then fuse. After that, element changes wait on rebirth.
Do I need a different list for alchemy weapons?
No. Forge and pills share inventory with the sect. Read alchemy and forge for the craft loop, then come back here for which tree to train.
