Path of the Idle Cultivator Founding and Running a Sect

Alignment, disciples, elders, pavilions, cities, and wars — your Qi bar is not the whole sect.

Sect Guide

A sect in Path of the Idle Cultivator is a machine you build around your own cultivation, not a multiplayer lobby. The game is single-player. Disciples, elders, pavilions, cities, and wars are systems you assign. Steam Early Access opened on 5 Sep 2026; sect tools keep moving in balance patches, so skim patch notes if an elder refuses to cultivate.

Found the sect when Cultivate and the Combat stair no longer pay enough stones by themselves. If you are still on hour one, finish Getting Started first. If you do not know why you would leave Cultivate, read How to Play.

Founding and alignment

You start as a rogue cultivator. Founding a sect gives you a roster, buildings, and an alignment slider from righteous toward demonic. Alignment is not the old Righteous origin (that origin was removed). It is a sect-level stance that colours wars, manuals, and how comfortable a Demonic cultivator body feels in the compound.

Slide on purpose:

  • Stay nearer righteous while you still need generic disciples and city diplomacy you have not learned.
  • Slide demonic when your personal dantian demonic % and monster-essence quests want the same flavour of world. Demonic origin still unlocks at 100% demonic on the dantian, not from a sect menu and not from the soul shop.
  • Do not bounce the slider every idle tick. Wars and city ownership care about who you are this week.

Specialization trees and pavilions come after the signboard. Unlock them as the Guide describes rather than dumping every elder into a random hall.

Disciples versus elders

Disciples are the workforce. Send them out. A disciple sitting at home achieving nothing is a wasted tick — the same lesson as you staring at Cultivate. Good jobs:

  • Elemental sites on the world map. Elemental nodes drop there for you or your disciples. That is the official route, not a hidden shop.
  • Hunting, gathering, and other map tasks while you duel or forge.
  • Cultivation so they can survive the jobs you send them on.

Max realm for disciples is currently about 49. A disciple at the cap can still be worth stats-in-place in later patches, but do not expect them to race you to Dao. If an elder or disciple shows Realm 0 Stage 1 after millions of years, check the Details tab for actual Qi and look at updates — that pattern has been a bug more than once.

Elders are specialists. Promote people who should run pavilions, not everyone with a pulse. Busy elders cannot always be promoted or dismissed; finish the job they are on before you reshuffle. Pavilion skill stuck at 0 with huge talent is another “export save, ask Discord” case, not a reason to found a second sect.

Recruit more than you can micromanage and you will forget who is on an elemental node. A smaller roster that is actually assigned beats a census.

Trainer versus partner

Weapon training has two named helpers. They are not synonyms.

  • Trainer = flat addition to exp gain.
  • Partner = multiplier to exp gain.

Put the better multiplier where the weapon you actually fight with lives. Sword bloodlines need high sword proficiency plus talent from weapon training — a partner on Sword does more for a Sword cultivator than a trainer on a weapon you never duel with. Fist, Palm, Spear, and Beast filters on the bloodline canvas care about the same idea: train the weapon your origin is.

You still need to open Weapon Training yourself. Disciples do not replace your proficiency bar. They make the bar less lonely.

Cities, wars, and the map

Sect army and city conquest exist. You fight other sects, take ground, and hold cities. If a defeated sect still “owns” land in the UI, that has been a known Early Access bug — export the save and check Discord rather than looping the same war for an afternoon.

Power indicators on the world map already hint whether you can win a node. Sect power and personal power are easy to mix up; read the colour/icon the first time you hover rather than assuming the sect will carry a Divine Beast you cannot befriend.

Wars are how a late-ish Pre-Ascension sect stops being a storage shed. They are not how hour-one Common origin should spend its only attention. Unlock Combat stones, then map sites, then wars.

Technical manuals and shared inventory

You can create your own technical manuals from the sect menu. Treat them as custom training literature for the roster, not as a replacement for your personal manual shop. Personal manuals still buy your tribulation. Sect manuals buy a school that can fight and farm without you standing on every node.

Forge and pill share inventory with the sect. Crafting in Alchemy and Forge pulls from the same piles your disciples are filling. That is convenient and also how you accidentally spend the last herb a pavilion needed. Glance at shared storage before a big refine. Divine Forge and later clan farms sit further up the same pipeline.

Eating treasures from world bosses, cooking, and body refining all nibble the same backpack. Legacy vault is how those piles survive rebirth. The sect will not keep your personal stack when you die.

What the sect is for

The sect exists so Cultivate is not the only producer in the save. Disciples on elemental sites, elders in pavilions, a trainer/partner pair on the real weapon, cities that pay, wars you can win, manuals the school actually reads. You still fight your own tribulation. Extra bosses still pay +20% this life to you — see Breakthroughs. Heaven Chosen still has to battle for heaven even if the outer disciples are thriving (Heaven Chosen).

Assign someone before you AFK. A sect with idle disciples is just a slower Cultivate tab with extra menus. A sect that is working is how spirit stones, nodes, and war loot arrive while you pause with P and read the next Guide entry.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

When should I found a sect?

After Cultivate and the Combat stair no longer fund manuals by themselves. Hour-one habits: Getting Started. Why to leave Cultivate: How to Play.

What is the difference between a trainer and a partner?

Trainer is a flat weapon-exp add. Partner is a multiplier. Put the partner on the weapon your origin actually duels with — see Sword cultivator if that weapon is a sword.

How do I get elemental nodes?

From elemental sites on the world map. You can farm them or send disciples. Fan origin questline is required later to fuse low-tier nodes after you control the dantian.

Why did my disciples stop climbing?

Max realm is about 49 in current Early Access. If they sit at Realm 0 after a long idle, check Details for Qi and patch notes — that has been a bug.

Does sect alignment make me a Demonic cultivator?

No. Demonic origin unlocks at 100% demonic on the dantian. Alignment is the school’s stance. Full path: Demonic cultivator.

Is a sect other players?

No. Path of the Idle Cultivator is single-player. You manage NPCs. Official links: links hub.
