Getting Started in Path of the Idle Cultivator

Sit down, export a save, read the Info Guide, then win the first bottleneck on purpose.

Getting Started

This is the first-hour path for Path of the Idle Cultivator, a free-to-play idle xianxia game by Wuxia Dev. Steam Early Access opened on 5 Sep 2026 (app 5007580). You do not need a paid pack to sit, gather Qi, and die with a plan. Optional Patreon Fate bonuses do not gate core content. The client is English-only and single-player.

If you already know the loop, skip to How to Play or Rebirth & Legacy. If the Breakthrough tab will not open, jump to Breakthroughs instead of restarting the save.

Pick a client and keep the save

You can play on Steam, itch.io (HTML5 in the browser, a Windows zip, and an Android APK), or the browser client. itch builds and the website can sit ahead of or behind Steam depending on the week — check patch notes if a button you remember is missing.

Export before you switch platforms. Open Settings from the gear on the speed bar, export the save, then import on Steam (or the other way around). Closing a browser tab is not a backup. If you bounce between phone APK and desktop, make the export a habit, not a panic click after a wipe.

Community answers live on Discord. Official store pages and invites are listed on the links hub. Public promo codes are rare; the codes hub explains where they actually appear.

Sit, gather Qi, read the Info Guide

The first action is Cultivate. Sit. Let the Qi bar move. Do not treat the Shop as a second tutorial — manuals and stones matter, but the game already ships an Info Guide (header Guide / News / Support). Read the Guide entries as panels unlock. This wiki is a decision map; the in-game Guide is the live tooltip for whatever v0.5 just renamed.

You will see a lot of tabs over a long campaign: Cultivate, Shop, Inventory, Sect, Combat, Cultivator Tower, World Map, Legends, Body Training, Eating, Weapon Training, Skills, Body Refining, Spirits, Bloodline, Divine Beasts, Dantian, Meridian, Manuals, Alchemy, Talismans, Forging, Cooking, Legacy, Achievements, Quests, Fate Cards, Auction House, Fate Shop, Ascension, Laws, Inner Realm, Galaxy Map, Divine Pagoda, Clan, Deities, Divine Forge, Empyrean Menagerie, Divine Alchemy, Divine Cooking, Chaos Realm. Most of those stay dark on hour one. That is normal. Unlock order is the tutorial.

Speed keys before you AFK

Pause with P. Raise speed with 1–9. The HUD is not 1 = 1x: 1 = 2x through 9 = 10x. Full table: Controls and the hotkeys tool. Leave speed low until you understand a new panel; a tribulation at 10x is a fast way to donate a life.

The settings gear lives on that same speed bar. Use it for export/import, not only for volume. On Android and the HTML5 client, tap targets replace some keyboard shortcuts — pause and speed still sit on the bar.

First combat is a spirit-stone stair

Open Combat when the tab appears. Early Combat is a simple stair: kill a few tiers, pick up spirit stones, buy the next manual, go back to Cultivate. The developer has said this tab is an early-game on-ramp, not the late-game farm. Later you hunt on the world map instead of looping the same Combat row.

Do not ignore Combat entirely on life one. Stones buy manuals. Manuals buy the stats that make the first bottleneck a fight instead of a wipe. You do not need a perfected Sword cultivator kit yet. A Common origin and a cheap weapon are enough to learn the stair.

First bottleneck and tribulation

Every realm has a bottleneck. The tribulation is combat — roughly a fifty-turn duel — not a waiting timer. Most first-life cultivators die here. Death is the loop: you keep soul power and legacy, then climb again. Read Breakthroughs before you tap Finish. Extra bosses after the first in that breakthrough give +20% this-life cultivation stats each. One extra win is often worth more than rushing the next realm name.

If you play Heaven Chosen, the Breakthrough tab may stay closed until you battle for heaven. That is a quest gate, not a broken install. Details sit on Heaven Chosen.

After the first death, open Rebirth & Legacy before you dump soul power into the first shop row. Soul weapons persist. Regular item inventory does not.

Origin on hour one

First-life defaults are not endgame. Skim the origins hub and the origins tier list once Combat and Cultivate both make sense. Common is a clean tutorial origin. Sword, Palm, Fist, Spear, Fan, Demonic, Beast, Heaven Chosen, Hell Embodiment, Wandering Elementalist, and the Heavenly Demon / Imperial titles are the named paths you will see (~13 origins). Righteous origin was removed. Demonic is not a soul-shop purchase — you reach 100% demonic on the dantian. Full path notes: Demonic cultivator.

Fist origin historically cannot gather Qi the same way; fist intent across origins is what unlocks that cultivation. Do not spend the first hour trying to “fix” Fist by mashing Cultivate. Either pick Common for the tutorial life or read the origin page before you commit.

Realm names from Body Tempering toward Immortal Ancestor and Dao are listed on the realm list. There are about fifty realms across seven tiers, plus Chaos. You will not see Dao on hour one. v0.5 playable content is Pre-Ascension plus the first Ascension.

First-hour checklist

  1. Pick Steam, itch, or the browser client and export a save from the speed-bar gear.
  2. Cultivate until Combat and Shop mean something. Read the Info Guide as tabs unlock.
  3. Run the Combat stair for spirit stones. Buy a manual. Do not live in Combat forever.
  4. Hit the first bottleneck. Fight. If you can take an extra boss, take it. Then Finish.
  5. Die or rebirth with a reason. Bank soul power. Keep soul weapons. See Rebirth & Legacy.
  6. When stones stall, found a sect and walk the world map instead of waiting on Cultivate.

Hour one is over when you can explain, in one sentence, why you would leave Cultivate: stones, a bottleneck, a map node, or a planned death. Everything after that is the rest of this hub, starting from How to Play and the Guides Hub.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Which platform should I play on first?

Any of Steam, itch.io (HTML5, Windows zip, Android APK), or cultivator-path.com. Export from Settings (gear on the speed bar) before you move. See Steam Early Access and Controls.

Do I need Fate bonuses or a code to start?

No. Optional Patreon Fate bonuses do not gate core content. Public codes are rare — check codes and Discord rather than random lists.

What should I do in the first hour?

Cultivate, read the Info Guide, run early Combat for spirit stones, then fight the first bottleneck using Breakthroughs. Export a save before you AFK.

When do I pick an origin?

After Combat and Cultivate both make sense. Common is a fine first life. Compare paths on the origins hub and origins tier list before you lock Sword, Fist, Demonic, or Heaven Chosen.

I died on the first tribulation. Did I fail?

No. Death is the loop. Keep soul power, check Rebirth & Legacy, and climb again. Extra bosses you won this life still taught you the Finish rule.

Where do I go after the first hour?

Read How to Play, then sect and world map when Cultivate stops paying. Patch context: updates.
